elliptical arch

This elliptical arch was manufactured at Phoenix’s Surrey factory for a property developer who has very exacting standards. An ellipse has constantly changing radii so presents a great challenge in drawing, concrete mould construction and cutting.

Using Michelmersh handmade stocks the arch is faced on all three sides and canted, the highly distinctive keystone is constructed from handmade creasing tiles.

Photographed in the despatch yard prior to being packed in a timber cradle for delivery to site on a specialist crane off-load vehicle.

Brick lettering in brickwork is highly effective form of signage or communication well prepared skilfully. During the recent reconstruction Heathway Bridge in Daegenham Essex the architects instructed the contractors to build in the word Heathway to the new bridge wall. Phoenix prepared full size drawings, cut and bonded the lettering from contrasting bricks, packed on pallets ready to lay brick by brick.

This stunning knot arch was specified by Christopher Smallwood Architects for a Stable block in Hampshire. Drawings by the Phoenix team where prepared for architectural approval, concrete made in our in house casting shop was then clad with tapered slipped voussiors. As the joints where only 3mm it was clear that factory pointing was the preferred option.

These shot blasted green blocks were being used for the construction of a sports complex in Essex. Large openings from hall to hall were called for and without joinery being installed within the opening; a fair finish on all three sides of the lintel was required. Phoenix cut a channel through the length of the blocks and then created a reinforcing cage as designed by our retained structural engineer, 50n/ concrete filled the void creating fully structural concrete lintels indistinguishable from the block work in which they sit.
